The new immigration law that was signed by Governor Robert Bentley on Thursday goes beyond the workplace and the roadways and into the classroom.

The law requires school administrators to check the immigration status of students enrolling in school.

Rey Lopez, a teacher at Butler High school, believes the law will target students.

"The law specifically states that they will collect all this information, their names and addresses and all this information.  What's the purpose of that, if not to prosecute them?" Said Lopez.

The signing of the strictest immigration law in the country has Hispanic leaders upset.  Many believe the bill will open the doors for racial profiling and discrimination.

Lopez hopes the bill will be challenged. He also works with the Alabama Hispanic Association and says they are planning to protest.

Gov. Bentley, however, is standing behind this law, and says he believes it will hold up in court.

"They [legislators] looked at laws across this country and to the challenges across the country and they did an excellent job in evaluating those," said Gov. Bentley.
