Pursuing “science-based” climate targets

AMD wins Greater Austin Business Award as the first global semiconductor company with verified climate goals through the Science-based Targets initiative

The year 2017 experienced some rather unusual climate changes. It was the year of the third warmest November on the record. The year also hosted numerous global natural disasters spanning from Bangladesh to Texas. This included Hurricane Maria in the Dominican Republic to Mexico’s 7.1 magnitude earthquake, and Monsoon flooding in Bangladesh to Hurricane Harvey and Irma in the United States.

But one company is using science-based goals to do its part in addressing climate change. AMD has created a robust set of goals that will help the company reduce energy use and climate impacts across its supply chain, building operations, and product use. Through their Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection program, AMD sourced enough renewable energy last year to power more than 3,000 homes for a year (based on 28,611 MWh and the EPA Greenhouse gas calculator). By 2020, AMD hopes to have improved the energy efficiency of their mobile notebook processors by 25 times from 2014 as part of their 25x20 initiative.

Due to their efforts, AMD won the Brookfield Environmental Friendly Award. The accolade – a category of the Greater Austin Business Awards program – recognizes businesses that demonstrate a commitment to environmentally sound practices.

“We aspire to create positive environmental and economic impacts in Austin and around the globe,” said Justin Murrill, Senior Manager of Corporate Responsibility of AMD. “We are proud to be a Platinum Austin Green business Leader and are passionate about engaging our employees to be environmental leaders in the communities we serve.”

AMD offers each employee free home solar evaluations, online cost comparisons, and an installation discount of $1,500. The company also offers pre-tax discounts on public transit costs, free bicycle tune-ups, free electric vehicle charging, and carpool matching in support of their 20/20 Austin Mobility Leadership goal.
