The low bronze dome of the old Citizen's Savings Bank is one of the first things you seen when exiting the Manhattan Bridge arch and colonnade onto Bowery and Canal—one of those columned piles that's in no immediate danger of modification, except for that bank logo slapped under the cherubs.
As of Tuesday, those cherubs may rejoice, as the 1924 building, currently an HSBC branch for Chinatown, has officially been landmarked. The bid for status under the Landmarks Preservation Commission describes the structure:
"Tall arches, pilasters, scrolls, keystones, entablature, balustrade and a clock flanked by carvings of a sailor and a Native American (from the seal of New York City) and beehives (symbolizing industry and hard work) complete this Beaux Arts monument, a fine companion to Carrere and Hastings’s Manhattan Bridge approach."
