Dear licensee

From 21 November 2020 to 31 January 2021, the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) will be out and about ensuring venues encourage and support the responsible consumption of alcohol.

Coinciding with school leavers’ celebrations and the festive season, officers will be onsite checking that licensees are not engaging in unacceptable alcohol practices or promotions (reference Liquor Act 1992) during this busy period.

Guideline 60 outlines examples of practices and promotions that are unacceptable in all circumstances, and those that are unacceptable unless they are conducted in line with a documented management plan that includes appropriate harm minimisation measures.

An unacceptable practice or promotion is one that:
  • encourages the irresponsible consumption of alcohol
  • has special appeal to children
  • is indecent or offensive
  • uses emotive descriptions that are likely to encourage the irresponsible consumption of alcohol
  • provides free drinks, or drinks at discounts, in a way that encourages patrons to consume excessive amounts of alcohol or consume more rapidly than they would otherwise do.
Take the time now to:
  • review Guideline 60 to understand your obligations around promotions
  • review any current or planned practices and promotions at your venue
  • make any necessary changes
  • ensure that you have a suitable management plan for any practices and promotions that would otherwise be considered unacceptable.
It has been a tough year and it is expected Queenslanders will be keen to celebrate its end in style. We have all done a great job working together to keep Queenslanders safe. Let’s continue to do so as we head into the New Year.

Don’t wait until an inspection to ask for help. Please contact our
liquor compliance team if you need any assistance.
