An appeal to recover Gloucestershire’s species-rich landscapes, using traditional grazing herds. We will enhance, connect and expand protected habitats for threatened species, sustaining biodiversity, otherwise not possible through human or mechanical intervention.

    Situation

Species-rich grasslands and heathlands are crucial wildlife habitats in the UK, locking in millions of tonnes of CO2, and providing vital ecosystems for nationally important pollinator species, butterflies, breeding birds and wildflowers. 96% of these landscapes are now lost in the UK. Putting these crucial habitats into recovery, and protecting their biodiversity typically requires heavy mechanical and human intervention, in a way that is simply not sustainable over the long term.

    Solution

We have an ambitious landscape-scale approach. Using large herbivores we will both recover and maintain complex habitats by replicating a process seen across the UK thousands of years ago. We will introduce grazing on a wider scale, acquiring and maintaining specialist herds, reaching neglected and inaccessible land. We will increase efficiency using modern technology and work with landowners and farmers to build a mosaic of bigger, better, more joined up priority landscapes in Gloucestershire.
