Ask Lifehacker: Gmail as default mail program

Dear Lifehacker,

When I click a "mailto:" link in my browser, my email client (mail.app)
opens. I mainly use my Gmail account, so instead of opening this program, I'd rather Gmail open up. It would be even better if it routed me directly to a "compose" page. Is there a way I can make this happen? Solutions for both Mac and Windows would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Josh

Dear Josh,

There is a way! Use Google's Gmail notifier, you can make Gmail your default mail client, which means it will open a Compose window when you click on a web page email link.

Download and install the free Gmail notifier. In Windows, right-click the Notifier icon in your system tray, and select 'Options.' Then check the box next to 'Use Gmail for internet mailto: links' and click 'OK.'

Mac users, in Gmail Notifier Preferences, go to 'Settings,' and select Gmail from the 'Default Email Program:' drop-down menu, like this:

Here are the instructions from the horse's mouth.

Love,
