Houses For Fighting Zombies And Protecting Privacy

This article is more than 10 years old.

While stumbling around the Internet, I came upon a wondrous creation for zombie lovers like myself. Or zombie haters, rather: the world's first Zombie-proof house (via All That Is Interesting).

KWK Promes, an architecture firm in Poland, calls the concrete house with movable walls "The Safe House." It's located in a small village outside of Warsaw, and is as elegant as it is secure, with glass walls throughout when the concrete slabs are pulled back.

The producers of the Paramount film (slated to come out in 2014) based on World War Z -- a documentary-style book about a global zombie apocalypse --  might want to consider including this house in the movie. It can fold in on itself to become a completely sealed concrete block, preventing any of the undead from getting in.

Over 8,000 square feet, it's built for real world protection, According to the KWK Promes website, "the clients wanted the feeling of maximum security in their future home." After crossing an outer gate, visitors have to wait in a "safety zone" before concrete slabs are moved to let them in. Additionally, there's a drawbridge that leads to the swimming pool.

KWK Promes has another house that might interest those more concerned about their privacy than Zombies.  The firm has a design for a home that Google Street View's cameras won't be able to capture: it's partially underground.

The "Hidden House" will be in Poland's Lower Silesia which used to be part of Germany and abounds with buried tunnels. Construction started in 2007, according to KWK's website.  A trapdoor covered with grass pops up for entrance. The photos of the place almost make it look like a futuristic hobbit house.

Built somewhere with a slope, the house protrudes out so that there is natural light. Should the garage door opener break, though, I'm not sure how the owners would get in.
