Bucks Food Calendar: May 27, 2011 – Memorial Day Weekend

Wow. I think we are about to get a really beautiful Memorial Day Weekend. Yee-ha.

What’s happening this week? I’ll begin with a non-food event, but one that you could easily combine with food and drink on a deck or patio in New Hope or Lambertville. I’m referring, of course, to the 2nd season of Summer Fireworks in New Hope & Lambertville. This hugely popular weekly event begins this Friday, May 27 at 9:30 pm promptly. The fireworks will continue every Friday through Labor Day. Make your dinner reservations, or crash in on some friends who live in the vicinity (make sure to bring some adult beverages; it’s only considerate).

Local vegan/vegetarian gourmet Chef Vincent Peterson is cooking up something, but he won’t tell me yet. It is good news, he says. Chef Vincent has been running a “pop-up” supper club called Kindle Café in Lambertville for almost two years and adding another wonderful option in the region for vegetarians, vegans and the rest of us who just plain love good food. The Kindle Café has been offering a prix fixe meal at Rojo’s Roastery on North Union St in Lambertville almost every Friday evening, and a similar arrangement called the Soupҫon Salon every other Monday evening at Manon, also on Union St. That will change for the summer, says Chef Vincent. The Soupҫon Salon, which includes local music as well as delicious organic plant-based cuisine, starts at 7 pm with dinner and entertainment beginning at 8:30 pm, every Monday night through August 29th at Manon Restaurant in Lambertville. Grass-fed beef in Bucks County? You betcha. Tussock Sedge Farm, owned and operated by Henry and Charlotte Rosenberger, raises organic, grass-fed beef near the small village of Blooming Glen, on Route 113 (near Perkasie). The Rosenbergers have been raising their cattle – and the land they graze upon – in a completely organic and sustainable manner, while also producing some very good tasting meat. You can visit the farm and learn more about it at the first Summer Farm Tour hosted by the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance, this Wednesday, June 1st. Each farm tour begins with a potluck (bring a dish, utensils, seating, beverages) at 6:30 pm, followed by a farm tour at 7:30 pm. To learn more about the Summer Farm Tour series, click here.

To market, to market. This week two more farmers’ markets open. In its second season, The Farmers’ Market at Playwicki Farm takes place every Wednesday from 3 pm to 6 pm at 2350 Bridgetown Pike in Feasterville. This year they will have at least one special event each month starting with a container garden planting on opening day, June 1. The container will then be raffled off during the market day.

Welcome also to the Lower Makefield Farmers’ Market, opening for the season this Thursday, June 2nd. The market goes from 3:30 to 6:30 pm, and will continue weekly until October 20th at Veterans Square Park, Edgewood and Heacock Rds. in Lower Makefield.

The Stockton Farmers’ Market will be open on Monday, Memorial Day from 10 am to 3 pm with great meat for your cookouts, breads, produce, cheese, ice cream and so much more.

What can you expect to find at area farmers’ markets this week? Arugula, Asparagus, Baby Kale, Beets, Bok Choy, Broccoli, Broccoli Raab; Head Lettuce: Butterhead, Red Leaf, Oak Leaf Mesclun Mix; Chinese Cabbage, Kale, Microgreens Salad Mixes, Mushrooms, Mustard Greens, Radishes, Rhubarb, Sorell, Spinach, Spring Garlic, Strawberries, Sweet White Tunips, Swiss Chard; Herbs (cut): Basil, Cilantro, Chives, Mint, Oregano, Parsley, Sage,Thyme. As well as:  potting plants; pastured meats (chicken, beef, lamb), eggs, cheeses, baked goods, honey and prepared foods.

Seasonal markets now open: The Farmers’ Market at Playwicki Farm (Wednesday), New Hope (Thursday), Lower Makefield Farmers’ Market (Thursday), Ottsville (Friday), Wrightstown and Doylestown (Saturday), Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance in Flemington (Sunday) and, of course, Stockton (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Don’t forget year-round farm markets like None Such, Maximuck’s and others.
