Wayne Rooney Curses Into Camera, Could Face Two-Game Ban (VIDEO)

WATCH: Rooney Could Face Ban For Cursing Into TV Camera

LONDON -- Manchester United star Wayne Rooney could be banned for two games after he was cited Monday for cursing into a television camera while celebrating a goal during a Premier League match.

England's Football Association said the striker used "offensive, insulting and/or abusive language." Rooney already has apologized and has until Tuesday to respond to the FA's announcement.

If he accepts what the governing body says, he draws an automatic two-game. If he challenges either the charge or the severity of the punishment, the case will be heard by a commission Wednesday and the discipline could be increased.

Rooney shouted an expletive directly into the camera Saturday after making a penalty kick, his third goal in United's 4-2 win over West Ham.

The 25-year-old player said after the game his conduct was "inappropriate." The host broadcaster, Sky Sports, also made on-air apology to its viewers.

Rooney, last season's player of the year in England, has endured a season marked by personal problems, injuries and poor play. But he has looked better of late, scoring nine goals in all competitions since the start of February.

Saturday's hat trick was his first since last January.
