Welcoming Students from Istanbul!

Jon Vogels
Once again we are very excited to be hosting students from Uskudar American Academy, a private school in Istanbul, Turkey.  Six students and one teacher will be staying with host families and visiting classes for two weeks.  This marks the third year of our partnership with the Uskudar School, one of the most prestigous schools in that country.  Students receive their education primarily in English, so the students we have on campus are fluent, and can teach our students a few key phrases in Turkish as well!  They spend a great deal of time with their generous and supportive host families and attend many classes at CA.  They will also do presentations for both the Lower and Upper Schools.

This exchange originated when teacher Tom Thorpe ventured out on a professional development trip in 2013 and met with some fellow teachers and acquaintances at one of the American schools in Istanbul. Then in 2015 I was fortunate to go to Istanbul with five CA students who stayed with their Uskudar exchange students. Unfortunately last year we were not able to travel there due to recent terrorist activity in that country, but we are hopeful we can resume our travel there when things stabilize further.  In my opinion, Istanbul is like no other city on earth, with a history and culture as rich and deep as any place I can imagine.

School officials at Uskudar have been quite excited about this exchange, just as we have.  These programs deepen our students' experience with people and cultures all over the globe, and allow young people to forge friendships that transcend the usual barriers.  Right around the corner, we will be welcoming four students from our partner school in Argentina as part of an exchange with the St. Andrew's School there.

Questions about our global travel program can be directed to me or Daniel Lopez, who coordinates all our travel experiences.
