THIS Worcester publican lit up last year's General Election - and now he's doing it all over again for the big EU debate.

Cap 'N' Gown landlord Ted Marshall made history last spring when his boozer, in Upper Tything, hosted 10 weeks of packed out hustings events involving all the city's wannabe-MPs.

With the word 'Brexit' firmly fixed in many people's mind the venue is set to give it another go - with seven weeks of EU referendum debates lined up.

Each week one particular theme around Europe will be tossed around the pub, from employment to security, British sovereignty to corruption.

And each night it will feature a range of Worcestershire's politicians, with different people invited to offer up alternative views from the 'in' and 'out' camp.

Mr Marshall also intends to widen the panel out by inviting top academics, business leaders and other figures with firm views on Europe.

Last year his General Election hustings led to the national media spotlight being turned on the city - with no pub ever thought to have attempted so many weekly hustings debates ever before.

It led to coverage on BBC Five Live radio and BBC1's flagship topical programme The One Show.

Mr Marshall said: "Last year's General Election was absolutely fantastic, and the EU referendum is a once-in-a-generation chance for people to have their say.

"We want the finest quality debates and will be inviting the finest quality people - it will be hustings 'plus plus'.

"We really want to put Worcester on the map."

Each weekly event will be chaired by Lord Faulkner of Worcester, the deputy speaker in the House of Lords, who said he would "strive to be fair".

He said: "The debates he arranged in the run up to last May’s General Election were astonishingly successful and became not-to-be missed events - an essential ingredient in Worcester’s election campaigning.

"I am very honoured to have been invited to chair this latest exercise in democracy and free speech.

"I shall strive to be fair, firm and impartial and give everyone with a point of view the opportunity to express it.

"The referendum will present all of us with the most important decision any of us are ever likely to have to take, and if the Cap 'N' Gown debates succeed in shedding light on the issues they will certainly be thoroughly worthwhile."

The first one is pencilled in for Tuesday, May 10 from 8pm - and from then on every Monday from the same start time until Monday, June 20.

Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that the in/out EU referendum will take place on Thursday, June 23.
