10 Reasons Why I Refuse to Celebrate May Day

As a little girl in Des Moines, IA (my birthplace), on May 1st, we would leave little May Day baskets full of popcorn-M&M, etc. mixtures on our neighbor’s doorstep. We’d ring the bell, and then run off and hide, waiting for them to answer the door and discover their treat. My neighbors, the Mahnkees--the salt-of-the-earth, playmates, Narnian Chronicle-watching-and-reading dears we actually “borrowed” sugar and eggs from once upon a time--would leave May Day baskets on our doorstep too.
Seems pretty innocent right? Fun times for the kids right? Wrong. Well, it is fun for the kids and maybe even for the adults. But God doesn’t think so. So with that said, here are 10 reasons why I refuse to celebrate May Day.
1) I’m Black.
Okay, this item’s just for kicks. Kinda. It’s funny, but truth be told, I’ve never met another black person outside of my siblings who’s ever celebrated May Day. (There aren’t too many of us in Iowa.) But this celebration is popular where there are large Celtic and Germanic cultures as there are in Iowa. I would imagine the Midwest, South (?), and certainly the Northeast are much bigger on celebrating May Day.
2) I’m Not a Pagan/Heathen.
I’m a quarter Irish and in my obsession with that culture (really, all U.K. culture/history), I’ve done extensive study on the Celts. May Day stems from the Druid/pagan holiday of Beltane, worshiping the Summer Solstice. And if you know anything about the Beltane fires, you know you can’t get any more pagan than driving cattle betwixt fires for blessings, women who desire to be conceive leaping over fires, and people haphazardly fornicating with whomever they choose--in public--on the night the fires are lit. This is EXACTLY the kind of behaviour that disqualified the inhabitants of Canaan from not only the land, but their lives. It is also the type of behaviour that got Israel into trouble time after time.
For [Ahaz] walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made molded images for the Baals. He burned incense in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and burned his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree. (II Chronicles 28:2-4)
But come here, you sons of the sorceress, You offspring of the adulterer and the harlot! Whom do you ridicule? ... Are you not children of transgression, offspring of falsehood, inflaming yourselves with gods under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks? Among the smooth stones of the stream is your portion; they, they, are your lot! Even to them you have poured a drink offering, you have offered a grain offering. Should I receive comfort in these? (Isaiah 57:3-6)

I don’t worship Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers. I don’t celebrate sexual immorality or phallic symbols such as the May Day Pole. I don’t need fertility rites to be fertile in life, the blessing of that comes with obeying the Law of God.
3) I Love Jesus.
“Oh how I love Jesus” …and because of that, I refuse to participate in pagan rites. (See above.)
4) I love Jesus More Than Fun. And Popcorn. And Chocolate Candy.
When it comes to certain events and activities some people, who claim they love Jesus “moooore than anythiiiing” set their Christianity aside so fast it’d make your head spin. If you honestly don’t know that celebrations such as May Day are wicked at their root, then you don’t know and there is grace for that. But if you know (and if you’re reading this post, you can no longer claim ignorance!), then you are held responsible for that knowledge. You can’t put your relationship with God on hold because you want some popcorn and candy.
5) I Don’t Celebrate Halloween.
Halloween, formerly known as Samhain, is the Autumn version of Beltane. The worship of the Autumn Solstice commences as do many similar activities. And although Halloween gets more PR than May Day, it’s nonetheless poisonous.
6) False Religions are an Abomination to God.
I once was watching Cranford set in Victorian England. In it, the townspeople were making ready for the May Day festivities. They had a Green Man and a May Queen whom they crowned every year. I stopped the Youtube video right there because I’d had an epiphany: the Green Man was really the Great Horned One, a god. The May Day Queen was the goddess. If you know anything about the Druid religion, then you know that they worship “the Goddess” and also, a great, horned, “God.” (I state “God” and “Goddess,” not because I believe them to be real, but because that is how the Druids refer to them.)
My knowledge of this which fed my epiphany came from my reading The Mists of Avalon, based on the Arthurian Legend. (If you read it, you’ll learn more than you ever wanted about Druidry, Beltane, and many other of their pagan rites.) And then the name itself, “Beltane,” piqued my interest. “Bel” was too close to the ancient and biblical “Baal” for my comfort and after a little digging, my suspicions were confirmed. Although the god and goddess celebrated by the Druids are largely a compilation of other “established” god[desses], Beltane is, in essence, the worship of Baal.

It may even be Baal and Ashtoreth worship. After all, who else would fit this “Queen of Heaven” description mentioned in Jeremiah? (See Jeremiah 7:18, 44:17-19, and 44:25.) How many times does the Scripture forbid this?? Not to mention witchcraft in all of its forms. Again, as aforementioned, Israel was punished time and again in the Old Testament for their worship of false god, namely Baal.
7) Syncretism is an Abomination to God.
Syncretism - the combination of different forms of belief or practice; the fusion of two or more originally different inflectional forms (Merriam-Webster).
Syncretism is the deceptive practice of combining Christianity and any false religion. Some examples of this are:
When the Jesuits traveled as missionaries to Asia and told them they could still pray to their ancestors if they converted to Christianity.
When African/Caribbean peoples attend church, yet have no problem calling on the local witch doctor for healing.
When the Eastern Europeans in old world, mountainous regions still use rituals and talismans against vampires and similar beings.
The Lord our God is ONE. There is none above or beside Him. He is God and God alone. And as such, He is pure. And jealous. (See Exodus 20:5, 34:14; Deuteronomy 4:24, 32:16; II Corinthians 11:2.)
You shall have no other gods before Me. (Exodus 20:3, Deuteronomy 5:7)
God didn’t say you can pray to Me and another. You can worship Me and another. You can consult Me and another. The Word says,
Choose you this day whom ye will serve… (Joshua 24:15)
And isn’t it further abominable that this false god would set himself up to be the god of fire when the true and living God is the All-Consuming Fire and we already saw the showdown between them in the Old Testament? Guess Who won?? It shol’ wasn’t Baal!

8) It’s One of Satan’s High Days.
In any faith, whether true or otherwise, there are high days or holy days. In Judaism, there are eight Feasts. In Christianity, we have Christmas and Easter. In, Wicca (the religion which stems from Druidry), you have days such as Beltane and Samhain. In the Judeo-Christian religions, we celebrate God and all that He has done for us, whether it was delivering the Hebrews from the bondage of Egypt or conquering death, Hell, and the grave through Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. So no thank you, I will not be celebrating one of Satan or Baal’s chief holidays. #IPass
9) I Believe in Spiritual Portals.
Now don’t click away at this point. I’m not talking about Stargate or Narnia. But if you are part of any predominant religion, you believe in two realms: the natural realm and the spiritual realm. Both realms are good. Actually, they’re neutral. As with any spiritual law, it depends on how you use it.
Just as certain physical places such as Pergamos (evil) or Jacob’s Ladder (good) at Bethel (see Genesis 12:1-9, 28:10-22, 35:1-22; Judges 21:19; I Samuel 10:3; I Kings 12:32) serve as portals which make it easier for a person to access the spiritual realm, for good or evil, there are also days and times at which this access is made easy. The Feasts of God are an excellent example of this.
Just two weeks ago, what did we see on the first day of Passover? A blood moon, a sign for Israel (whether good or bad, only time will tell). Go throughout Scripture and locate all of the miracles which took place for Israel. Chances are most, if not all of them, took place just before, during, or just after a Feast celebration. Here are some examples:
Passover: Israel was not only delivered from Egypt, but they experienced a wealth transfer as well.
Purim: The Israelites in captivity were delivered from Haman’s genocidal plan and plundering.
Hanukkah: The oil in the temple miraculously stretched eight days allowing all the candles of the menorah to be lit and stay lit.
Sukkot/Tabernacles/Booths: Despite the fact that we celebrate Jesus’ birth in December, Jesus was most likely born during/around the Feast of Sukkot (Dr. Renny McLean). Do the math: its only four months between Christmas and Easter, but set the dial back to October when Sukkot takes place, and that’s six months. This is an important realisation since Jesus was 33 and a half when He died on the cross and He spent three and a half years in ministry before His death.
Just as we who celebrate the Feasts have the opportunity to be under a portal, frequently referred to as “an open heaven,” so do those who worship darkness have a similar opportunity to access an open portal. Don’t believe me, just look at this example of the crime rate absolutely spiking on Halloween, especially, in the evening when any demonic rites would take place.

10) Ignorance is NOT bliss.
You now know the truth of May Day, of Beltane, and its dark roots. You cannot go back to ignorance even if you tried. But you don’t have to take my word for it, do the research yourself. Choose from whatever source you like as long as they have their facts straight. But tell people! Ignorance is NOT bliss. And we will be held responsible for right and wrong as mature adults, whether we believe it or not.
