Description

Single Class: $20 (Members: $17, $14, Free)

Fresh off his popular Sound+Vision: Watching Popular Music course, Geoff Pevere returns to provide a fascinating global survey of the most radical and rich period in world and movie history. The decades after World War II were a time of possibility and revolution, and the cinema was an art form capable of capturing and responding to that change. The movies grew and expanded, not only reflecting a drastically altered world but shattering the frame through which we looked at it. From the groundbreaking performances of Brando, Nicholson and Catherine Deneuve to the provocative films of Kubrick, Altman and Godard, these clip-driven lectures will provide a lively and compelling tour designed to generate discussion, illuminate the present through the past, and send you away hungry to watch great films.

This course is led by film writer Geoff Pevere, who has been writing, teaching and broadcasting about movies, media and popular culture for more than thirty years. A former movie critic with The Toronto Star and regular contributor to The Globe and Mail, he is also the author of two books on Toronto's cinematic legacy, Toronto on Film and Don Shebib's Goin' Down the Road.

Doors will open one hour before the first class. Registrants will receive supplementary materials in advance of their first class.

Thursdays, June 2 – July 14, 10 a.m. to noon

June 2: The 50s Part One: Hollywood Under Siege
Attendance peaks and plummets, leaving Hollywood facing an enemy far more frightening than the Bomb or invaders from Mars: TV.

June 9: The 50s Part Two: Movies as Global Art Form
Around the world, a new generation of filmmakers emerges with bold new visions. The art movie is born.

June 16: The 60s Part One: The Studios Collapse
Size mattered when it came to striking a blow against TV, but it also left Hollywood vulnerable to collapsing under its own weight. The musical prevailed, but there was nothing to sing about.

June 30: The 60s Part Two: Movies as Revolution
A generational fissure opens up in America and the tumult on the streets spills into movie theatres.

July 7: The 70s Part One: New Hollywood and the Director as Superstar
Raised on rock & roll, TV and European art movies, Hollywood is stormed by the most uncompromising movie-makers it has ever seen.

July 14: The 70s Part Two: When Art was Entertainment
The multiplex offers moviegoers multiple choices in one destination: will it be Burt Reynolds or Clint Eastwood? Or will it be Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini and François Truffaut? Or how about Deep Throat?
