Hi
Leaders get what they expect, and they get what they tolerate. The team you are leading is ultimately a reflection of you. This blog post is about changing the conversation from compliance and accountability to commitment and ownership.

Let me know what you think.

Accountability: Four Ways to Manage Team Expectations

Leaders get what they expect, and they get what they tolerate.

What are you tolerating? What are the low expectations that you are "putting up with" that shouldn't be happening?

Maybe you're telling yourself a story that allows you to tolerate unacceptable behaviors. "Well, I don't have the skill set on my team to backfill for this person?" Or, "I need to choose my battles." Or "It's no big deal." Or, "I'll burn the relationship if I give her feedback." How about this one - "I can't hold her accountable for (fill in the blank) because she's a good producer."

When leaders tolerate behaviors that they shouldn't, accountability always becomes an issue between the leader and the team member. It's always externally driven. If the leader doesn't hold the team member accountable, the work product is usually late or doesn't get done at all.

Ignite the Potential of New Leaders

Emerging leaders are usually bright, talented, and rising stars in their organizations. The challenge is that most new leaders are promoted, because they were good at what they did in their previous role, without any training and development. As a result they are often out of their elem ent, unprepared, and even scared. And with good reason, because like so many people who have greatness thrust upon them, their handling of the often-rocky transition to manage their former team members will affect not only their future, but that of their company's as well.

Sal Silvester's timely book, Ignite! incorporates for the first time 5.12's People-First Leadership™ model that gives new leaders all the tools they need to elevate their effectiveness.  In this how-to business book, Sal, a veteran of corporate potential maximization, shows the path to igniting the potential of new leaders.
