DENVER — A new website is making it easier for local teachers to find work outside the classroom.

Roughly one in five Colorado teachers work second jobs, according to a report by the Center for American Progress, and now the website ByATeacher.com is giving teachers a place to find everything from tutoring jobs to odd jobs.

Computers are central to Andrew Merta’s work as a teacher at a private school in Louisville.

“Right now we are into basic Java Script,” Merta said.

But when Merta leaves school, he has been using his computer to connect to a different kind of work.

“A typical teacher’s trunk looks maybe not like mine,” Merta said. “It’s full of tools.”

Merta works a second job as a handyman, and lately he has been advertising his services on ByATeacher.com.

“We’re making it easier for teachers to do work that they’ve already been doing,” said Bryan Carruthers, founder of ByATeacher.com.

He said in six weeks, 63 teachers have been verified and signed up to do everything from tutoring to working as a personal chef. He said dozens more have inactive profiles that will soon seek summer work.

Carruthers said the website is also a great tool for consumers.

“There’s a value proposition to knowing that a teacher is a local member of your community,” he said. “They’ve been background checked, they’re highly educated, they are somebody you would want to invite in your home or feel comfortable having around your kids.”

The site makes it easy to search for teachers in your area and easy to find their skills and availability. Jobs are lined up through messaging and payments are available through the website so cash isn’t exchanged.

“It’s a good thing because you don’t have to think about finding customers,” Merta said.

The website takes care of everything from marketing to pricing, and in return, it gets 18 percent of the profit. Merta said he doesn’t mind because it’s much easier than using Craigslist or other sites.

“I got paid the same day,” Merta said. “The money was transferred to my account, which I really like. There was no hustle, no bustle.”
