Liverpool FC: John Aldridge, John Henry Fire Back at Fernando Torres

When Fernando Torres made the move to Chelsea from Liverpool for £50 million in January, he immediately ruined his image in the eyes of Liverpool’s many fans.

He said he was delighted to finally be at a “big club” that shared his ambitions, and with the Blues, he would be fighting for titles like he deserved to be. And, now that he was at a club full of superstars, the mood was lighter and he no longer felt out of place.  

Well, that’s a nice, big, “How do you like me now?” to the Reds from the Spaniard.

Alas, Torres’ move has not been an instant success. In seven games with the Blues, he has failed to score, and now some people back in Liverpool are firing back at his comments.

Principal owner John W. Henry appeared to be talking about the misfiring Spaniard in a recent interview about manager Kenny Dalglish’s impending contract. Henry said that the Reds seem to be happier now that a certain someone is no longer a part of the team.

He wasn’t talking about Roy Hodgson.

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has also weighed in on FT’s departure. I use the initials because Aldo refused to say the disgraced Liverpool striker’s name.

Right after the transfer, Aldo accused Torres of being fraudulent with Liverpool fans. But he recently thanked Torres for leaving, saying it’s been a “blessing in disguise” for Liverpool.

Aldo also tells the striker that he’s “made his bed and now he’s got to lie in it.”

Torres managed to keep his mouth shut after his first week in London—until recently, that is.

When he met up with the Spain squad this week, he was asked about Chelsea’s upcoming Champions League tie with Manchester United. He told reporters he had admiration manager Sir Alex Ferguson because he is a “coach that fights for victory, like [Pep] Guardiola, [Jose] Mourinho and [Rafa] Benitez.”

He really had to bring Benitez back into it? And to go so far as to praise the United manager?

It’s going to be pretty rough when Chelsea visits Anfield next season. Michael Owen returning as a Red Devil doesn’t even begin to describe it.

It just goes to show that Torres really had no desire to play for Liverpool after Benitez left last summer, and Kenny apparently didn’t want to win enough for Torres’ liking.

All that Torres’ comments have told us is that Hodgson wasn’t the only one wasting six months of all our lives.
