East Orange County residents say big trash not being collected

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — People in an east Orange County neighborhood said they’re living in a slum because their bulk trash isn’t getting picked up.

Curbs were littered with old couches, busted TVs and trash.

When Channel 9’s Kimberly Eiten began asking leaders questions, the county said it cleaned up the curb outside some homes.

But before the cleanup, piles of televisions, couches, and cabinets were rotting outside homes near Dean Road and Colonial Drive, and some homes still have trash.

“Nobody seems to come out and get the garbage,” said resident Luis Diaz.

Diaz said he had so much garbage that when his curb filled up, he started stacking it on the porch.

He said he was waiting on large-item collection day.

What he didn’t know is that collection day wasn’t coming.

Under Orange County’s new trash rules, neighbors have to call and schedule pickup for big items.

“Nobody knows what needs to be done, so you’re going to see this in a lot of neighborhoods,” said Diaz.

One street over, it’s a tale of two trash pickups.

Hector Bonilla said the county came and collected his old couch days after he called.

“I just called the number on the bins,” he said.

But next door, residents said they called about their throwaway couches and got no response.

“I knew they were probably going to be out there for a while,” said resident Seth Roderick. “The lady across the street, down there, (her trash) sat out for like a month.”

Eiten called the county to ask about the holdup.

That’s when workers collected trash at nearly half-a-dozen addresses.

It’s a start to fixing what residents said has been a confusing and frustrating change to their garbage service.

A spokesperson said when county workers came out to do cleanup, they educated people about some of the new guidelines.
