Greenbelt City Council Preview: March 14

The Greenbelt City Council will meet Monday at 8 p.m.

The Greenbelt City Council will meet Monday at 8 p.m. to discuss various agenda items and state legislation that will affect the city.

One of the items up for discussion is banning the use of “Official Ballot” on campaign literature. The Board of Elections does not want legislation enacted to prohibit the wording and the chair of the Board of Elections, Pam Gregory, will be present at the meeting to discuss such action.

The National Capital Park and Planning Commission Project Manager Chad Williams will also be present at the meeting to give council a summary on the Greenbelt West Sector Plan. Williams will speak of the scope and schedule of the project, which plans to expand boundaries to include commercial centers.

Several pieces of state legislation are also on the agenda and council will decide whether or not they support the bills. Up for discussion; a bond bill that would authorize a state debt of $25,000 for the Greenbelt Arts Center to renovate its bathrooms. There is also a bill that would establish a five cent plastic bag fee, much like the one that has already been implemented in Washington, D.C. The stores that participate would get one cent for the bag costs and two cents if they provide their own bag to customers, then the rest of the fee would go toward the State for Chesapeake Bay Trust after administrative costs were taken out.

The meeting will be at 8 p.m. at the City of Greenbelt Municipal Building and it’s broadcast on TV, channel 71 or 21 on Verizon Fios.
