President, and author: Disclosure forms show Barack Obama makes $1m-$5m from book royalties

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have assets totalling between $2.8 million and $11.8 million, according to federal disclosure forms released today.

The President's assets were mainly in U.S. Treasury obligations, shown to be between $1 million and $5 million in U.S. Treasury bills and between $1 million and $5 million in Treasury notes.

But it also showed that he earns millions in royalties from his books Dreams From My Father and Audacity Of Hope.

Both books were written before Mr Obama became America's 44th president in 2008, but they still earn him between $1 million and $6 million in royalties.

The disclosure forms do not record exact figures, instead putting assets in ranges.

Apart from the bumper paychecks from Treasury and publishing, the forms reveal a glimpse of the Obamas personal finances.

They have between $250,000 and $500,000 in a JPMorgan Chase Private Client Asset Management checking account, between $100,000 and $250,000 in Vanguard 500 Index retirement funds, and at least $250,000 in Bright Directions College Savings funds for their daughters Malia and Sasha.

Mr Obama was given a $225,000 advance to write the 2007 Dreams From My Father. There was no further advance for the following year's Audacity of Hope, but Mr Obama received a further $133,334 for Of Thee I Sing published in 2010.

No figures are yet available on how much he is making from that book.

He also earns between $1,000 and $2,500 in royalties from the book Surviving Against The Odds, written by his late mother S Ann Dunham.

The disclosure forms reveal the Obama holdings grew from 2009, when the President reported assets of between $2.3 million and $7.7 million.

The president's tax return for 2010, released April 18, showed he had total adjusted gross income of $1.7 million and paid $453,770 in federal income taxes.

The Obamas reported $1.3 million in taxable income after deductions, according to a 2010 tax return.

While the family is in the White House, meals are provided by the taxpayer via White
House Food Services.

Travel for official purposes is also at taxpayer expense and is not counted as taxable income. All of  this means that, for practical purposes, Mr Obama has very few
living expenses.
