WHO ARE YOU?

I’m Nicola Paul, and I’m the owner of Yellow Bird Digital.

WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS DO?

Yellow Bird Digital specialises in digital marketing and online retail. We specialise in working with small and growing brands who are looking to promote their business, increase brand awareness and customer engagement, and those who need help selling online effectively.

WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

I work partly from home in Shawlands, and I also hot desk at Collabor8te, which is a great shared working space in Merchant City. It’s been a great place for me to meet other small businesses and fellow entrepreneurs.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

I started at home – I’m lucky that my type of business allows me to work with just my laptop and mobile! I also look after my own marketing and website which helps keep costs down.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

My background is in digital marketing and e-commerce in the fashion industry, and I’ve worked with a mix of fashion and footwear brands.  I’ve also worked with some charities.  Before I started Yellow Bird Digital I was Head of Digital & E-Commerce for an agency based in London. I also sit on the Board of Trustees at Glasgow Caledonian University Student’s Association.

WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP?

Get out there and meet people! Glasgow has a great small business network and there are so many events and opportunities to meet other business owners. It’s really inspiring talking to other entrepreneurs who have been in my shoes, and it’s also great for building confidence in networking.

HOW LONG HAS YOUR BUSINESS BEEN RUNNING?

I only started the business in July this year, but I already couldn’t imagine doing anything else!

HAS ANYONE HELPED YOU GET STARTED AND HOW?

I met with Business Gateway who are great for small businesses, and I also joined Scottish Women in Business with is an amazing support network.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST MISTAKE/OR WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?

Nothing major so far – it’s a constant learning experience so I think it’s important not to dwell on things.

WHO WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?

JK Rowling and Mary Portas, who have both worked so hard to get where they are today.

WHERE DO YOU PLAN YOUR BUSINESS TO BE IN FIVE YEARS TIME?

It’s small steps for now, but I’d like to grow my brand to be the go-to for SMEs in the area looking for digital expertise.
