Alaqua Animal Refuge Rescues 50 Dogs, Needs Your Help

Last weekend, law officers rescued over 125 dogs from a puppy breeding operation in Jackson County, Florida. Many were adopted, but the remaining dogs — the sick, injured, pregnant, and mothers with nursing puppies still needed a home.

Alaqua Animal Refuge came to their rescue, taking in about 50 dogs Tuesday.

The cutting edge no-kill animal shelter in Freeport, Florida, has helped find homes for thousands of animals since it opened 10 years ago. It is home to as many as 250 animals at any given time.

The 50 dogs are in dire need of immediate care. They were held in cages in unhygienic conditions and without adequate drinking water or medical care.

The dogs are mostly small breeds such as Yorkie mixes, Boston terriers and Chihuahuas as well as some mixed “designer” breeds. Several elderly dogs are missing teeth or eyes and some are even blind. Some of the puppies’ survival is not guaranteed since they are too young for vaccines and have been exposed to disease and rat bites.

A little Chihuahua who is unable to remain standing because her back legs are not working appears to be pregnant.

A Yorkie mom, who has already lost two newborn puppies prior to her arrival at Alaqua, was constantly picking up her remaining two puppies and moving them because she was so stressed.

Laurie Hood, Founder of Alaqua Animal Refuge, is urging the community to offer financial aid to the shelter so that these dogs can receive the treatment they need to survive.

“Please consider making a donation to aid in the costs of these sweet, deserving dogs’ medical care. Some have a long road ahead of them, but they are safe with us until they can be adopted,” said Hood.

“Together, we can help give them protection and shelter, while we find them new, loving families.”

Alaqua Animal Refuge is also working to stop the crimes that led to the terrible condition of these animals. They want to make breeders accountable, have them pay taxes and be open to inspection.

All puppies will not be placed up for adoption until they are cleared of potential illness. Adult dogs are available and potential adopters should stop by the shelter, meet the dogs and fill out an application.
