Ontario: Temp drop, storm risk, and a look to Canada Day

Tuesday, June 28, 2016, 6:54 AM - Southern Ontario's latest episode of oppressive, sticky heat is at an end, at least for now.

"Today's high, near 23oC, will be 10 degrees cooler than Monday in the GTA," Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham said early Tuesday.

A good chunk of southern Ontario might see some scattered showers in the mid-day and afternoon hours, but for the most part, the parched province is looking at a mostly rain-free day. Any thunderstorms that do pop up are expected to be mostly confined to eastern Ontario, likely to remain non-severe.

Northern Ontario, which was thoroughly deluged over the weekend, is also in for a break from the rain, though a cold front slumping south through the region from Manitoba brings a return to showers and storms Wednesday afternoon and evening.

As for the rest of the week, and beyond, southern Ontario continues in a mostly dry pattern, with a potentially ill-timed exception.

"The best chance for rain in the long range is on Canada Day with the potential to interrupt some outdoor plans without being enough to make a significant difference in the drought," Gillham says. "A cold front will bring a period of showers and thunderstorms (though not a washout) as it crosses Ontario on Canada Day. Close call for fireworks in Ottawa."

As for temperatures, a brief warm-up in the Great Lakes beckons on Thursday into Canada Day, but will be cut short by a shot of below-seasonal weekend temperatures.

"A rather cool weekend for cottage country (struggling to top 20oC on Saturday) and northern Ontario, though temperatures won’t be too far from seasonal in the south," Gillham says.
