Contribute quota to make polls credible, peaceful — Most Rev. Sarpong

The Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Church in Kumasi, Most Reverend Peter Kwasi Sarpong, has appealed to all stakeholders in Ghana’s upcoming general election to contribute their quota to make it a credible and peaceful one.

He explained that although it was the responsibility of the electoral commission to organise and supervise the election, lack of support and collaboration from all citizens and other stakeholders would affect a smooth running and organisation of a peaceful election.

Most Rev. Kwasi Sarpong made the appeal at the 7th graduation and 9th matriculation of the Spiritan University College at Ejisu in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality in the Ashanti Region.

69 graduates

Sizty-nine graduates were presented with bachelor and diploma certificates while 69 others were also matriculated into the school to pursue various courses of study.

The former Archbishop urged Ghanaians to critically examine the policies of the political parties, their manifestos and select those who were ready to serve to improve the lives of the people.

He called for the selection of leaders who would not plunder the nation or bring unnecessary hardships on the people, saying there is the need for all to beware of politicians who would come to the electorate with empty promises and empty slogans with the motive of winning the election but doing nothing else to develop the nation.

Most Rev. Kwasi Sarpong reminded Ghanaians to vote for people because of their good character and not because they belonged to a particular tribe or religion, belonged to the same political party but should be able to make Ghana a better place to live in and added that such a person should have the welfare of the people at heart.

Most Rev. Kwasi Sarpong cautioned all Ghanaians to select leaders who were sincere, truthful, reliable and trustworthy, fair and just, with leadership qualities such as integrity, sympathy and those who understand the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian.

The former Archbishop said avoiding violence was the only way through which peace could be attained and called for all to avoid sycophancy and illegal vigilante groups such as “Macho men” who could easily plunge the nation into chaos.

Appeal

He appealed to all Ghanaians not to see the church as an enemy of development but a partner and would allow it to play a modest role in “promoting virtues that are the materials needed to build the prosperous nation.”

The Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Kwasi Obiri Danso, in an address read on his behalf, congratulated the graduates on their attainment of the degrees and the diplomas which they earned on merit.

He reminded them that they represented the future of the country so they should go out there to make giants strides to enhance the development of the country.
