message 3: by FromAna (new)

FromAna (fromanam) I've read 14 but own a few more I plan to read soon

message 4: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (caladhiel) I know, I want to read so many more of them on there!

message 5: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidithebee) I'm proud to say I've read 33 of those. I do think it's a little unfair to count Harry Potter series as one book. A lot of these are books I already plan to read.

Elaine (caladhiel) Awesome Heidi!

bookyeti | 2 comments I've read just over half of them (51). A lot of my favorites on this list.

message 8: by Anja (new)

Anja I've read 26 of this list. Don't find it fair to count the complete works of Shakepeare as 1 book....pfff

FromAna (fromanam) Just finished Jane Eyre (LOVED IT!)
I'm at 15!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I've read 36, have 10 on my TBR list, have tried to read 3, but couldn't get through them, and have seen the movies for another 5. So - I am going to challenge myself to at least try to read the ones that I have not read yet.

Wow, you must really love classics! You are my idol. A lot of these books are the sames ones that are on the 1001 groups book list. Are you in that group, too?

message 15: by Alison (new)

Alison | 1 comments Was this an update of the Big Read the BBC did a few years back and do you know why they reckoned most people will have only read 6? I'm a bit embarrassed to say I've read 57 of them and can see myself reading quite a few more in the future - but I think that's partly because I'm a sucker for lists and a lot of these books appeared on various lists over the years!

message 16: by Lynne (last edited May 16, 2009 11:57AM) (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) | 37 comments I've read 27 and some of the ones I've read are more than one book (Harry Potter, Narnia, Hitchiker's Guide). Come on BBC-the complete works of Shakespeare? That could take a lifetime of reading by itself.

One I would highly recommend if you haven't read it is "A Town Like Alice". It's maybe not as well known as some of the others on this list, but a great book.

Vicki (vicki507) I've read 12 out of the 100. I have many on my tbr list and there are others that I started and never finished.

message 22: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Teo | 12 comments I've read 21 of them.

I find it to be a strange claim by the BBC though. What is meant by "most people"? People as in "the whole world" or people who actually read books?

There are a lot bestsellers on there, so it's strange to assume that most people would not have read at least 6 of them.

message 23: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Dixon (kiwikathleen) I've read 46 of them. And I agree with you, Daniel - what DO they mean by "most" people?

message 24: by Linda (new)

Linda I've read 40 and 8 are currently on my TBR list. And a few of them I have no intention of ever reading, so there!

message 25: by FromAna (new)

FromAna (fromanam) HAHAHA that's okay Linda
there are some I feel the same about

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I think we can all agree on that. And if you think this list has some NGRs (Never Gonna Reads), you should look at the 1001 books to read before you die list!!

Carla (bcshutterbug) | 4 comments I've read 11 of those, read almost all of 2 other series on there and have at least 5 of them on my to read list. Was there an age group they were looking at when they said that?

Of course three of them were from school...but that still leaves more then 6 that I've read on my own. Of course there's also some on there that I do not want to read, having read others by the same author and not liked their writing style.

Bold are the ones I want to read, which you can see are a lot. Strike throughs are the ones I have read...and the bolded strike throughs are the ones I read before, but want to read again (high school reading..over 10 years ago or so now).

Also, I'm too afraid to really try to read Charles Dickens... is his writing difficult to read?

That a good goal. And doable. Would love to know what you think of Owen Meany when you're done. It's one of my favorites.
