From Snow Days to Budget Adoption

Yet another snow day for Prince George’s County Schools and later in the week the school board passed the $1.6 billion 2012 fiscal year budget.

The because of winter weather Tuesday, which left a lot of parents confused. There was a wintry weather prediction for the county, but by morning the roads were clear. Patch investigated how the county determines and found out authorities make decisions based upon the worst-case scenario from data collected at the local and county level. So far the multiple snow days have not interfered with the last day of school, which is scheduled as June 17, but that will be determined mid-March.

Greenbelt Patch columnist, Dawn Mooney, broached a topic that stirred conversation amongst parents Tuesday — . Mooney wrote of her own experiences at multiple playgrounds where other children were throwing around “f-bombs,” as if no one could hear them; she was especially disturbed when she heard this language at Buddy Attick Park in Old Greenbelt.

Wednesday night council members from Greenbelt, Berwyn Heights, New Carrollton and College Park met at the College Park council chambers to discuss county matters with County Executive Rushern Baker, III in the . Baker spoke mostly on ethics and also about growing the county’s tax base and attempting to change the perception of Prince George’s County.

There was also sad news Wednesday night when a due to a medical emergency. Hook had been a volunteer firefighter since 1986, first in Berwyn Heights, where he rose to captain, then in Hyattsville. The Fire-EMS Department Memorial Service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Bunker Hill Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association (Station 855).

The week ended for Prince George’s County Schools. The $1.6 billion budget had been revised several times since the first proposal by Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. in December. Part of the adopted budget is an incentive program for employees near retirement.  The budget now has to be approved by the county.
