‘She Can STEM’ Campaign Aims to Empower Young Women

Seeing is believing. That’s the premise behind a new public service campaign, which seeks to make young women believe they can have a future in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) by showing them successful women currently working in these fields. The marketing message is a simple but highly effective one: “She can STEM. So can you.”

The campaign includes a series of ads spotlighting prominent women in STEM (showing them interacting with interested younger women) and the website shecanstem.com—which contains profiles, videos, and resources. Some of the women featured in the campaign include Tiera Fletcher, Structural Analysis Engineer at Boeing; Lucianne Walkowicz, Astronomer at Adler Planetarium; and Bonnie Ross, Head of Halo Game Studio at Microsoft.

The “She Can STEM” campaign was created through a partnership between heavy-hitting tech brands GE, Verizon, IBM, Google and Microsoft, and nonprofit partners like Girls Inc., Girls Who Code, and The New York Academy of Sciences. This is an impressive collective effort to encourage more girls to feel comfortable stepping into STEM by painting a clear picture of what their future can look like.
