IKEA Releases Instructions for a DIY Sustainable Indoor Garden

IKEA is well known for their ‘easy’ to build (but not so easy) flat pack trendy home furniture. But IKEA has branched out into sustainable living spaces.

Space10, IKEA’s innovation hub, works to better the future of urban living through a series of labs. Space10 tackles current challenges that the global community is facing on a regular basis. Their recent endeavor seeks to provide cities with the ability to feed themselves through food producing architecture.

One such innovation is a spherical garden called The Growroom. The Growroom is a tall, multi-tiered plywood structure that promotes indoor sustainable living. The spherical garden empowers people to grow their own plants and herbs in a more eco-friendly manner.

The garden is made up of plywood rings that interlock to form a spherical shelter standing 2.8 by 2.5 meters tall (9 by 8.2 feet). The garden can easily be built using a set of plans and some basic tools. Better yet, Space10 has made these plans available to the public free of charge.

Space10 believes that by releasing the design files to the open source community, the potential for adoption of the Growroom is maximized.

With CNC milling machines and laser cutters more available than ever before, a hobbyist with little woodworking skills can commission an entire structure using only a few sheets of plywood.

The Growroom was first featured at the Chart Art Fair and then the structure was on display at the Vice’s Munchies Festival in Copenhagen.

Visitors could experience the sustainable living by entering the sphere and embracing everything it has to offer.

Various countries have shown interest in the Growroom, these include Helsinki, Rio de Janeiro, Taiwan, and San Francisco. However, promoting sustainable living, without providing the means to accomplish the objective, does not bode well for Space10. For this reason, their plans are available worldwide, for free.
