Woman alleges she suffered discrimination after visiting her husband in prison

A woman believes she was evicted when her landlords learned that she is married to a prisoner.

Shannon Rivoire complained to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal that she was discriminated against because of her family status. Property owners Surinder Alamwala, Kuldip Singh Alamwala, and Rajpaul Mahal denied the allegation, claiming that they just wanted to sell the house.

Unless the parties resolve the conflict among themselves, the case will now go to a hearing.

In a decision on April 22, 2016, tribunal member Catherine McCreary rejected an application to dismiss Rivoire’s complaint.

According to McCreary, the landlords failed to disprove the woman’s claim that they asked her to move out after they found out that her husband is a federal inmate.

One of the homeowners was working at the Matsqui Institution when he saw Rivoire at the medium-security facility in Abbotsford last year. Three days later, the woman was given an eviction notice.
