The Calgary Flames locked up a key piece of their blue line Tuesday, signing Mark Giordano to a six-year contract extension.

The deal is reportedly worth $40.5 million, or $6.75 million per season, as first reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

The 31-year-old, who has served as team captain since 2013, signed a five-year, $20.1-million deal with the club back in 2011 that was set to expire at the end of the upcoming season. The new deal will carry through to the end of 2021-22, coming to an end three months prior to Giordano's 40th birthday.

Flames general manager Brad Treliving acknowledged Tuesday that the captain agreed to take less money than he would have received as a free agent next summer.

"I do think Mark Giordano on the open market can make more than what Mark Giordano signed for here with us," Treliving said.

"He was very cognizant of his team here and making sure we give ourselves the best chance moving forward to have success," he added.

Giordano's past two seasons were cut short due to injury, but he set career highs in points in each, with 47- and 48-point performances which included personal benchmarks in goals (14 in 2013-14) and assists (37 in 2014-15).

He signed with the Flames as an undrafted free agent in 2004, and has spent his entire career with them. He's posted 66 goals, 179 assists, and 466 penalty minutes in 510 games.

The Flames now have close to $30 million committed to six defensemen - including Dougie Hamilton, Dennis Wideman, T.J. Brodie, Ladislav Smid, and Deryk Engelland - in 2016-17, according to General Fanager.
