NHL trades aren’t just hard on players and team locker rooms. Trades have a lasting impact on NHL players’ families as well.

Defenseman Jordan Leopold has been with the Columbus Blue Jackets for this past season and the time away from his family has apparently taken a toll on his young daughter.

Leopold’s 11-year-old daughter Jordyn, sent an open letter to Minnesota sports radio station KFAN 1003 asking that her father please be traded to the Wild.

Here’s the letter in full, addressed to the “Minnesota Wild Coaches”

Parts of it are truly heartbreaking. Players often choose to head to new cities alone rather than uproot their entire family on what could be a short turn around. Time away from family isn’t easy on anyone.

But, this story has a very happy ending. With about 20 minutes left on the trade deadline, the Minnesota Wild picked up Leopold from Columbus for Justin Falk and a fifth-round pick.

According to a Minnesota Wild spokesman, the trade is something of a happy coincidence. The team says the letter was written in early January and found its way to social media Monday morning. Wild GM Chuck Fletcher actually had no idea about the letter until after the trade was made.

And while Jordyn’s letter may not have been the only factor in the trade, Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen did tweet “It isn’t always just about business…”

Looks like Jordyn will get her daddy back home after all.
