Don Cherry: Leafs should take captaincy from Phaneuf

With newly appointed head coach Mike Babcock now at the Toronto Maple Leafs' helm, changes should be expected.

During the first intermission of Game 5 between the New York Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning, Don Cherry gave his two cents on CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada" about what should come next for the Maple Leafs with Babcock now in charge, including with captain Dion Phaneuf.

"He'll straighten Dion out. He'll have him back there like he did with Calgary and one thing I would do, and I know I'm going to upset a lot of people, you have to do it gently, I would take the captaincy off him," said Cherry. "Then he can just play, then he doesn't have to worry about all that bologna that goes on."

Cherry also suggested that, unlike last offseason where it looked like forward Phil Kessel came to camp out of shape, fans can expect Kessel to show up looking to impress his new coach.

"I guarantee you Kessel is going to be 10 pounds lighter when he reports and he won't come to camp and laugh about how he was only on skates 10 times," said Cherry.

He then added that the Maple Leafs are going to win, though what Cherry probably meant to say was win ... down the road.
