Londoners were plagued by rush-hour chaos at both ends of the day yesterday amid a spate of problems on both commuter and underground lines.

Beleaguered commuters attempting to travel from Waterloo were met with severe delays as a fatality on one line into the terminus and a broken down train on another paralysed the service.

The delays come just days after Commissioner of Transport for London Sir Peter Hendy described London’s suburban transport as "s**t and awful”London gripped by rush hour chaos

In an interview with Management Today, Mr Hendy said: “People hate the suburban rail service, they hate it.”

A spokesman for Network Rail said two incidents in the London area were to blame for Monday’s chaos.

He said: "We had two incidents which had a knock-on effect. The first one was a person being struck by a train near Surbiton at 14:00, the other was a broken down train near Clapham Junction at 16:30.

"The fatality caused a huge amount of problems because of where it was. A lot of trains were out of sync going into the evening at one of London's busiest stations.”

People waiting to board trains at Waterloo took to Twitter to voice their frustration.

Commuters on the underground also experienced delays yesterday after a fatality on the track at Victoria station.
