Creating a community space in what its owner describes as a "food desert."

True to gluttonous form, San Francisco seems to show no signs of slowing down its obsession with food trucks, with the bustling SoMa Streat Food Park announcing plans for a second outpost in Mission Bay.

The Chronicle broke the news that the permanent food truck park was hoping to expand its empire, and owner Carlos Muela confirmed to Eater that a second location is "definitely happening," with a tentative opening of late summer or early fall. The new park, to be located on 4th Street, will include a variety of new-to-SF food trucks, as well as a beer and sangria garden. It'll be about the same size as the current location, and similarly designed for a constant rotation of festivals, parties and events, including plenty of pre-game festivities for Giants and, eventually, Warriors games.

Mission Bay, while experiencing rapid growth in the form of residential housing and office space, is lacking in neighborhood hangout spots and dining options for residents, resulting in something of a "food desert," according to Muela. The park's future landlord (and partner), Mission Bay Development Group, has been helping Muela and his team navigate the often tricky landscape of neighborhood politics and potential NIMBYs. But based on a recent citizen's advisory meeting, Muela feels confident that this is something the neighborhood both needs and wants. Though the park has yet to receive zoning approval, residents have been clamoring to vote "yes"— a rare occurrence for San Francisco's often territorial neighborhood groups. The recent success of The Yard at Mission Rock, the Giants' pre-game pop-up composed of shipping containers and boasting a beer garden and the first static iteration of Off the Grid, is a positive indicator for the success of more community space in the area.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
