Product description
In "Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies," players begin their adventure as a city guardian who is sent to retrieve a sacred tree's fruits, which have the power to grant wishes. Players travel the world, conquer fearsome monsters and unravel an epic storyline. During their journey, players will encounter mighty opponents in fast-paced battles, and also interact with a colorful cast of characters. "Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies" contains special modes that let players share their adventure with others, allowing up to four players to team up via a local wireless connection and experience the fun of tackling challenging monsters and dungeons cooperatively with their own characters. Players can even leave the game active in their backpacks, pockets or purses and still interact with other players via an interactive "Tag Mode." Information about players' characters can be wirelessly transmitted to others, and treasure maps and customized greetings can be exchanged automatically by players who come within range of one another when their games are set to Tag Mode. Players looking to enjoy a variety of different game activities can take on special side quests. Some of these quests will be earned by progressing through the game, while additional quests will be made available for free download for players with broadband Internet access after the game launches, providing hours of additional content for virtual adventurers to enjoy either on their own or with friends. Some downloadable quests will continue the main storyline of the game, while others offer standalone missions.

The game very lengthy. The gameplay is not overly complicated, and yet remains interesting throughout the quest, so it doesn't get stale. Fantastic RPG for those that like a casual, short bursts of gameplay experience (play a few minutes here and there while traveling etc). More than likely though, you'll be lured into playing the game for hours.
I like story driven games usually, and my biggest hesitation was that you could customize your entire party. Names, visuals, even classes. I was afraid it would make them generic. Surprisingly, that was not the case, as it just made the characters feel more personal to me.
Conclusion: Honestly? If you like RPGs at all, like AT ALL, you'll enjoy this game. Old School or New School. JRPG, or WRPG. It is all around accessible, charming. Dragon Quest is to gaming, what dessert is to food. A delightful pleasure.
Dragon quest 9...Dragon quest 8..the forgotten king one and dqm2...joker. all fun games. I really like jrpg style games...stragedy...and turned based...weird but cute little monsters too...lol
However, at least it was the correct game, and it was very securely shipped.

This is the most comprehensive handheld RPG I've found. It has so many different side quests and the most customizable party possible. I love that you can customize both the hero and all the party members including how many you have and what their roles/jobs are. You can later change jobs of anyone, unlock new careers, and get side quests for each one. The leveling up is like DQ8, where skill points can be allocated. This systems makes this a very replayable game, moreso than most RPGs. The only negative point I have for play is that there is only one save file. I would love to have a second one so I could either play through again or lend the game to a friend without losing my file.
The monsters are amusing, and even repetitive fighting doesn't get boring. There are no random battles. All enemies are visible on the map. If you are at a high level, they try to run away from you. You can dodge practically all of them if you want or hang out near spawning points to battle and level up. There is an easy to access quick save, which is useful when you play for so long that your battery starts to die, which I did -- many times. The controls are great, very simple. It can be played entirely without a stylus if you prefer. (That's how I played.) You can also use the stylus if you want. Everything about the mechanics of the game are perfect. Like other DQ games, you save in churches, and if you die, it doesn't game over but instead takes half your money and puts you in a nearby town.
The graphics and sound are great. It has all the charm of other Dragon Quest games, but it has been appropriately proportioned for the DS. I love the style of the game over all. It's very charming. The only thing missing for me was voice acting, but I'm sure it would be tough to pull off in a handheld game like this.
The story is also charming. It's less intense then DQ 8 and a bit more "feel good." There are elements of death and sorrow and ghosts but nothing too depressing. It's a game I like to pick up any time, and I think I will play again when I finish, try all the different careers, and complete all the side quests. This is the one DS game I am always in the mood to play. I recommend it heartily to anyone who enjoys the old school turn-based RPGs. This is the best one for a handheld system.
