SYNOPSIS: When Janiyah Henderson's brother’s best friend, Fredrick Jenkins, needs a new assistant, she knows she’s the perfect candidate. So what if she’s had a crush on the conservative accountant since she was nine? She’s the last woman Freddy would fall for.
REVIEW: JUST MY TYPE by author Synithia Williams proves that opposites are really counterparts of a perfect whole.
Accountant, Frederick Jenkins is a very rational guy who believes things should add up but his feelings for personal assistant, Janiyah Henderson just don’t. Janiyah is nothing like the woman he envisions spending his life with. She’s too impulsiveness, resistance to all things structured and probably most damning; she reminds him of his mother. Her prolific and impetuous ways frequently causes Freddy’s father to overextend himself, forcing Freddy to step in and relieve the financial strain. Freddy refuses to repeat his father’s mistakes by marrying a woman with similarly impetuous ways.
Unfortunately, the heart won’t accept reasons or logic and Freddy’s feelings are not going away. When Janiyah finds herself in need of a “real” job, Freddy hires her. While this temporarily solves Janiyah’s problem; it is the beginning of Freddy’s, as living and working closely with Janiyah is more than he can handle. Janiyah knows she is the perfect woman for Freddy but after one too many failed attempts at trying to convince him, she finally accepts that as long as she chases Freddy, he will never see her as a good catch. It is time to let go and let love take its course.
The story has a multi-layered plot and Williams skillfully maintains perfect pacing between each issue resulting in a fun and consistent reading experience.
The characters are very animate and believable and I had a clear picture of a sexy and straight-laced Freddy and an unconventional and beautiful Janiyah. Janiyah’s brothers are also given enough background that I can’t wait to see if more is told about them in the future. While Janiyah grovels and is almost pathetic in her pursuit of Freddy, she manages to redeem her personality by finally standing firm and walking away.
There is a duality to the dialogue between Freddy and Janiyah throughout the novel as they say one thing but think something else. This duality is also present in Janiyah’s communications with her parents. When Freddy and Janiyah speak freely it is clear there is more than filial feelings between them.
JUST MY TYPE has many great aspects, most notable the evolution of the main characters and William’s ability to create a fresh feel from an old theme. JUST MY TYPE is an enjoyable novel but WORTH THE WAIT still remains my favorite.
