Molly and Zacc on the PCT

Molly and Zacc are putting in long days covering up to 60kms/day as they "sprint" to the Canadian border before their visas expire!!! They've around 1000km to go!!!

Molly: "My body is capable if my mind is willing” I’ve had this mantra on repeat as we make our way through the purportedly “easy” Oregon section of the PCT, typically walking for 12-14 hours per day. While some days are pretty tough, I’m still just so happy to be here, living in the wilderness and witnessing some of the most beautiful things I’ve ever laid eyes on. "

Our ArmaSkin News lead photo was taken by Zacc at Crater Lake - Mile 1821.  They were very recently in Sisters - Mile 1984/2650 (3192km/4265km). If you live in Oregon and are heading to the Cascade Locks PCT Trail Days festival then please keep an eye out for Molly and Zacc who hope to be there on one of their rest days.

Happily their blog has been rescued from hackers and now captures recent reports from Zacc and Molly.

Jason's 2 weeks with Lucy

A month or so back we mentioned that Jason Lynch, an Aussie on a quest to raise funds for some new wheels for a special young friend of his, was planning to spend a couple of weeks on the trail with Lucy.

Well, he did catch her, and found out the hard way that keeping pace with a lady on a mission at high altitude was one heck of a challenge.  Typically the Andes Region that they travelled in was 3-4000 metres (10-13,000ft) above sea level.

An extract from one of Lucy's posts gives a hint of the pros and cons of their meetup!

"I had a friend come and join me for the past couple of weeks which was equally awesome and challenging for the both of us.

THE AWESOME:

  • Jase has been sick for 2 ½ years and it was miraculous he recovered and could make it
  •  He brought resupplies with him so I could be dry and warm
  •  He also brought drinking chocolate
  •  I had someone to talk to
  •  Wombat had someone more interesting to play with

THE CHALLENGING:

  • Jase wasn’t use to 30km days, altitude or carrying a pack... and as we were only able to manage ⅔’s of my minimum daily km’s, I became more and more stressed about my visa... and more and more harassing about time
  • Jase became so ill from the conditions here, I carried his pack for him along with my equipment while he acclimated across the first week. By the time he had to leave, he could manage his base gear, but wasn’t able to manage half portions of the food, kitchen or tent...
  •  ...and then we were water poisoned.
  • And above all else, from my side, I’m really set in my routine (bossy) and couldn’t deal with delayed mornings, carrying extra food for palatable cooking, and possibly most interesting, being in someone else’s company."
Kudos to Lucy!
(The rumour that Jason needed the mouthguard in the picture to protect him from Lucy's right cross is not confirmed.)

If you'd like to check out Jason's own amazing story here's a link.

We estimate that, at recent pace, Lucy has about 40-50 days more hiking to get to the Ecuador border whereas her visa is due to expire in about 55 days.  Of course a lot depends on terrain, weather and where she plans to cross the border.   But one thing is certain, Lucy will be relieved to make the crossing.   Here's a link  if you'd like to follow Lucy's progress more closely.

Camino del Norte

Michele and her husband Peter recently returned from 6 weeks in Spain and Portugal. They spent much of their time walking and hiking in Valencia, the Douro Valley, the Lisbon Coast and the Basque Coast - where they did a week of hiking the very hilly Camino del Norte from San Sebastián to Bilbao.

"We covered 126km over 5 1/2 days with a 10 1/2 hours, 32km stretch being the most arduous! We encountered a day of rain and the resulting mud!

We had a fabulous trip (560km) and our ArmaSkins were our best friends - without them we would have both encountered blisters for sure. We would wash them out each night and by the next morning they were dry."

Kate Takes A Tumble

One of our tough woman Ambassadors, Dr Kate, recently took a tumble when out climbing and received a broken jaw, broken teeth, a split chin.....

Comes just at the time Captain Kate has been recognised for her 15 years of service to the Australian Army and Army Reserve. Well done Kate!

We hope to see Kate back in action soon.

Mick to Run Melbourne Marathon

ArmaSkin is pleased to be helping Mick as he runs the full 42km Melbourne Marathon in October to raise money for the Heart Foundation.

Mick will be running a “Donate to Win” competition on Social Media, where people would get 1 entry into the draw per $10 donated to the Heart Foundation via the link below. The “Donate to Win” will run up and till the Melbourne Marathon and then he will record himself drawing the winners out.

The Heart Foundation has acknowledged the fundraising on their behalf and have in fact endorsed Mick as an Ambassador for the Foundation.

Below is a link to his fundraising page which explains why he's running and why he chose the Heart Foundation.

Crazy Cupid Cousins take on OxFam Trailwalker

ArmaSkin is pleased to be supporting yett another OxFam Trailwalker Team.  This time, for the Sydney Trailwalker, we are supporting Nat and the Crazy Cupid Cousins.

These ladies are taking their training seriously and have been trekking all around NSW.

They recently walked over 40km in the Namadgi National Park including Mount Tennant twice!, Booroomba rocks and part of the Australian Alps walking track.  They've hiked along the Murrumbidgee River from Kambah pool to Pine Island and through Monolith Valley, around mount Cole, up Mount Owen, and up the Castle.

This preparation for the Trailwalker including lots of steep climbs bodes well for the Team's success.

Not surprisingly the ladies already feel rewarded given that they have been enjoying some of the best views in NSW as part of their training.

If you'd like to read a bit more about the Team and give them some encouragement here's a link to their donation page: https://trailwalker.oxfam.org.au/my/team/34534

New ArmaSkin Ambassadors

ArmaSkin is excited to announce a couple of new Ambassadors, Dr Alaina (Brinley) Rajagopal and her partner Dr Aditya Rajagopal, of  California USA.

Alaina and Aditya are experienced hikers and climbers having completed major hikes such as Half Dome, gone to Everest Base Camp and climb Mt Baldy and Mt Wilson in SoCal regularly for training.

They also partake in endurance running and will be doing the "Dramathon" which is a half marathon through scotch whiskey country in October.

Like this couple we are very excited for the adventures they have planned in the upcoming year!

Their goal is to climb the Seven Summits. The first of the seven will be Aconcagua in February 2020. In the meantime, they’ll be climbing Mount Baldy, Mount Whitney, and other California mountains.

Both Alaina and Aditya are medical professionals with Alaina in particular having a strong interest in extremes.

One of her key interests is the field of viral reactivation in spaceflight and spaceflight analogs. She also spent 11 months working on medical treatment in remote environments in such places as Kenya, the Philippines, Brazil, and Nepal.
