Tucked into the heart of downtown Houston, the Hermann Park Conservancy has been a favorite stop for nature lovers since 1922, at a time when the city was literally growing up around it. Now under the guidance of a nonprofit citizens’ group, Hermann Park has been preserved for generations to come.

Visitors to the park can enjoy a ride on the Hermann Park Railroad, which travels the two-mile track during an 18 minute ride. Pedal boats are also available to rent for a 30-minute ride on McGovern Lake, and several cafes and walking trails are located throughout the part. If you and your date are really into nature, be sure to stop by the Japanese garden and the Bayou Parkland, with its 80 acres of prairie meadows and forests.

The Skyspace is an attraction guests can visit before sunrise and sunset daily. Artist James Turrell created the installation in 2012 and engineered its acoustics for electronic music and live performances.
There is no charge to attend the light sequences at either time of day. Guests view the light before and at sunrise and sunset from the viewing area of the installation. It creates a unique interpretation of the light at the start or end to the day.

The Menil Collection is made up of 30 acres of various types of art. It’s contains a total of four buildings–the main building hosts the permanent collection and special exhibit while another building is dedicated to the works of artists Dan Flavin and Cy Twombly. The third building houses year-long installation projects, and the fourth building is the future home of a drawing institute.

The permanent collection is known for its modern European and Surrealist paintings and sculptures, as well as medieval artwork and artifacts. It also includes art from Africa, the Pacific Islands, Pacific Northwest Native Americans, and more. Admission is always free, and it’s easy to spend hours with your significant other while you share your thoughts about the artwork.

Take a short drive from downtown Houston to visit the Battleship Texas. She is permanently moored along the Houston Ship Channel after being in active service during both World Wars. The public is invited to walk across her decks and imagine themselves as one of her sailors during those turbulent times.

Guests can explore the ship on their own or take part in a guided tour. A snack bar is open on weekends, and an on-site store sells souvenirs and gifts. The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site is located nearby, complete with picnic tables and grills. The site is also an excellent place to go hiking and spend an afternoon or even an entire day.
