Tech Jobs: How Does Philadelphia Region Stack Up Against Rest Of Nation?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Workers in the technology industry earn more than double the average annual salary of the rest of the private sector. That's one takeaway of a new study of the flourishing state of technology jobs across the country. But there are some stumbling blocks locally.

The tech industry -- everything from computer programming to product manufacturing, IT services to software developers -- added nearly 200,000 people to the payroll from 2014 to 2015.

The average salary: $105,400. New Jersey tech workers make more than all but those in three other states, according to CompTIA's Cyberstates report. Delaware ranks 8th; Pennsylvania 18th.

But the First and Garden States are two of only five to see industry employment dip. Pennsylvania added more than 1,300 tech jobs last year, with app developers and computer systems analysts seeing the greatest increases.

Across the country, the winning sector is IT services -- more than 100,000 jobs were added in cloud computing and systems management. Software gigs pay the most: $142,500 a year, on average.

And there are jobs to be had: CompTIA says more than 938,000 tech openings were posted in the last quarter of last year.
