A group of Polish citizens traveled to a refugee center in central Sweden Monday to allegedly carry out a massacre using knives, iron pipes and axes.

The 14 men have close ties to nationalist and nazi movements in Poland, and were arrested after police searched their cars close to the refugee center. A number of weapons were confiscated and the Poles were held for conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. They were released Wednesday afternoon.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports that the men were out for revenge over a previous unspecified incident. At least three of the men took part in an anti-immigration rally in the Swedish capital of Stockholm in late January.

Peter Axelsson, the attorney of one of the men, said his client was simply in the area as a tourist.

“My client says he was in Nynäshamn as a tourist. He’s been in Sweden since early February,” Axelsson said. “It’s important note that in the car my client was in, no weapons were found.”

Axelsson added, “it was a coincidence that the other men were there at the same time.”

Police have since upped security at all refugee shelters in the area.

Previously, a large group of masked men assaulted people “of foreign appearance” in central Stockholm Jan. 29. They handed out flyers with the message to give refugee children “the punishment they deserve” prior to carrying out the assaults.
