One of Canada’s largest professional services companies is putting its muscle behind a bid to renovate an industrial building in downtown Kitchener.

Officials with Deloitte, the city and real estate investment firm Allied REIT announced Monday that Deloitte will help renovate the property at 195 Joseph Street, then relocate its local office to that site.

In a press release, Peter Barr – the managing partner for Deloitte’s local arm – said that “innovative solutions” to challenges are important for Deloitte’s clients.

“Our new office is designed specifically to foster innovative thinking to meet these challenges head-on and deliver the best to our clients,” he said.

Mayor Berry Vrbanovic called Deloitte and Allied REIT’s plans for the site “stunning,” saying that he was impressed by the company’s goal of retaining historical features of the property.

The building at 195 Joseph Street was previously part of the Lang Tanning Company complex, which was once among largest leather producers in the British Empire.

Its smokestack has received provincial heritage protections.

Deloitte touts its future downtown office as “more social, more flexible (and) more technological.”
