See Tim McGraw’s Oprah-Assisted ‘Humble and Kind’ Video
Tim McGraw‘s latest single “Humble and Kind” is an anthemic tune with a simple-yet-powerful message, so it’s fitting that the video accompanying it also comes from a special source of inspiration.
Written by Lori McKenna (who co-wrote the Grammy-nominated “Girl Crush”), the song’s lyrics essentially list the myriad ways one can stay just what the title suggests: “Hold the door, say please, say thank you. Don’t steal, don’t cheat and don’t lie,” McGraw sings in the second single from his Damn Country Music LP.
“I felt like it was going to be a special song when we finished it,” McGraw says of the recording. “Then when we mixed it, it just really came alive. It’s not about being ‘my’ song or ‘my’ album or ‘my’ piece of music or any of those things. I think it’s just the message that the world needs. The song is so special, we wanted the video to really have a meaning to it and the video to be really universal and worldly and encompass everyone and what the emotion of the song is.”
The music video (watch it below) was directed by Wes Edwards and features scenes from Oprah Winfrey’s seven-part documentary series Belief, which depicts how people with a wide range of beliefs search for deeper meaning and connection with the world around them. The song’s music video depicts the universal scenes of faith and life and combines them with an understated performance from McGraw, captured by a 360-degree turntable lighting rig. The Belief series aired on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network last fall.
In conjunction with the song and video, McGraw is launching stayhumbleandkind.com, a site that will collect stories shared with the hashtag #stayhumbleandkind. The site will also encourage random acts of kindness through a simple tracking program. “We want to celebrate positive stories that embody the lyric and message of the song – from the most simple to the extraordinary,” says McGraw.
“Humble and Kind” is the follow-up to “Top of the World,” which reached the Top Five at country radio late in 2015.
This song is so special to me. I really wanted a video that showed the universality of the message of Humble and Kind. Thanks to Wes Edwards for executing this vision and to Oprah Winfrey for lending us scenes of Belief from all over the world. I hope you like it as much as I do.
