Former Memphis police officer sentenced for stalking

Former Memphis police Officer Joshua Barnes is serving 11 months and 29 days in the Shelby County Department of Corrections for stalking and installing a tracking device on his former girlfriend's vehicle.

Barnes, 29, resigned in January 2016 and late last month he pleaded guilty to stalking and illegal electronic tracking of a motor vehicle, both misdemeanors. Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Chris Craft sentenced him to 11 months and 29 days on each count to be served concurrently.

Barnes was arrested and charged several times with harassing and stalking his ex-girlfriend outside her job, her residence and at bars. The tracking device was discovered under her vehicle after she took the car to an auto shop.

His personnel and internal affairs files show violations of department policies, including lying to investigators, and concerns about his behavior. One officer said Barnes was "obsessed" with his ex-girlfriend and talked about her constantly.

"Officer Barnes was acting weird all night talking about guns and looking at maps on his laptop," the officer told their supervisor. "I don't feel safe around him because his actions do not reflect that of a stable officer."

Barnes' attorney Joseph McClusky said the sentence resolves his Shelby County cases, and other cases remain pending in Mississippi.
