Two weeks ago I had the chance again to go inside the Kauffman Center construction site for photography. For this post I’m highlighting my three fisheye-lens shots taken from the top level off the edge as close to the center as I could get. The Lobby will be called the Brandmeyer Great Hall.

Fisheye view looking directly south on top level.

Fisheye view looking southwest.

Fisheye view looking in a southeast direction.

The Kauffman Center as I refer to it, also known as the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, is a $400 million project in downtown Kansas City, Missouri designed by architect Moshe Safdie. The Kauffman Center will be opening this September.

It occurs to me this was a very bad design, or a great design but a very bad location. Look through the glass and what do you see? The worst of Kansas City! Is there money left to clear out those old buildings and plant grass and some nice trees?

Is it too late to move the whole shabang over to Penn Valley Park?

Radioman, you’re completely misinformed as to what’s outside the windows. First off, it would be absurd to place the building outside the Crossroads District and away from the skyline in some scheme to spread things around a la your Penn Valley Park idea.

Second of all, of course there’s going to be landscaping and trees put in where you see construction implements now. If you think this is the worst part of KC then you must hold a place like Strang Line Road in Olathe in high regard.

Wow, I could not disagree more. I hope this comment is sarcastic.

Great work Eric. I look forward to the amazing shots you’ll have when this place is actually full of people!

See the big hole out front? that will be a park, all green space. you wont see the cars, as they will be under ground. trust me, it will look much better soon.

Dude these are freaking awesome. This is great and a perfect showing of why I can’t part with my own fisheye lens. I love these shots and your work. I want to visit this place once finished to take photos too.

It’s like I’m standing there looking at that beautiful view. Perfectly done!! I’ll give you one thing radioman… at least you didn’t suggest the whole shabang move to Johnson County! There is a lot of beauty in that view, many historical buildings and bravo to the businesses in that area that are in restoration and reconstructions efforts right now. I’m proud to visit that area as often as possible.
