Sacramento Police K9 Rollo Retires, Was First Rescue Dog To Pass Training

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A trailblazing Sacramento police K9 is celebrating his final day on the job.

The Sacramento Police Department says K9 Rollo is retiring to civilian life. He had been with the department since August 2007, his partner being Officer Linda Matthew.

Rollo's service marked several firsts for the department: He was the first rescue dog to pass the K9 training program, he was the first Dutch Shepherd for the department, and Officer Matthew was Sacramento police's first female K9 handler.

"During their time together, Officer Linda Matthew and Rollo patrolled the streets of Sacramento with the toughness and grit you would expect from a hard-working, crime-fighting duo," the department wrote in a release. "There was hardly a felony in progress that ever was broadcast that did not have a "K91 enroute" immediately following it."

Rollo was nine-months-old when he passed the K9 training program.

North American Dutch Shepherd Rescue helped bring the police department and Rollo together.

Friday will be Officer Matthew and Rollo's final patrol shift together.
