A "world-class" centre for sports performance has officially opened in Edinburgh.

The £33m Oriam building in the grounds of Heriot Watt University opened its doors to the public on Monday.

The long-awaited project received £24m of funding from the Scottish Government and £9m from organisations including the university and sportscotland.

The Oriam will be used as a training facility for Scotland's advanced athletes while it will also offer opportunities for grass-roots competitors and the local community.

Representatives from the country's main sports bodies, including Scottish FA, Scottish Rugby and Scottish Squash and Racquetball, were consulted throughout the development.

It houses a full-size indoor synthetic pitch, full-size outdoor synthetic pitch, a 12-court sports hall, five outdoor grass football and two grass rugby pitches.

The Oriam is also home to eight squash courts, two exercise studios, a four-court sports hall and advanced facilities for sports science and medicine.

Catriona McAllister, Oriam's chief executive, said: "It is now all about the sports and delivering that platform both for national excellence and local participation.

"Oriam is something that all of Scotland should be extremely proud of and the response from each and every person who has toured the site since it completion confirms that a truly world-class facility has been delivered.

"Oriam will provide an inspirational environment for our top athletes and those who aspire to excel from across many sports, as well as within our local community by encouraging people to improve their fitness, take part in sport or simply enjoy a more active lifestyle."

Funders and VIPs were given preview tours of the site last week, with sports minister Aileen Campbell praising the team for keeping the project on time and on budget.

Mel Young, chairman of sportscotland, described the Oriam as "a world-class facility with community use at its heart".

He added: "We know that creating the right environment to encourage people to take part in sport, at every level, is an essential part of building a sporting system and with the completion of Oriam, facilities in Scotland are the best they have ever been."
