LOWELL — A 20-year-old Lowell man was taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital Tuesday night after he showed up at Lowell General Hospital/Saints Campus with a stab wound he told police he suffered about four hours earlier.

Police were notified that a man was being treated in the emergency room for a stab wound about 8:30 p.m.

That man told investigators he was walking along a path by the Eastern Canal, between Central and East Merrimack streets, when he was approached by an unspecified number of men who fought with him and stabbed him about 4:30 p.m., according to police.

The man did not report the incident until after he took himself to the hospital and officers went there to interview him, according to police.

Police said the man was treated in the emergency room and then taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital for further treatment of what was described as a non life-threatening wound.

The victim was unable to give investigators a description of his attackers, according to police.

Officers searched the walkway along the canal but were unable to find any blood or other evidence of a crime scene, according to police radio broadcasts.
