A chill in the early hours, when the minimum temperature fell down three degrees below normal, gave way to a pleasant morning in the capital today as a bright sun came out.

Delhi saw the mercury slide down substantially overnight as the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below yesterday's minimum of 7.5, as also three degrees down the normal level.

The early morning chill and the shallow fog, however, dissipated as the sun came out in full force, promising yet another pleasant day for the residents of the capital.

Delhi has experienced pleasant weather for the past few days despite the fact that icy winds have been blowing across the city.

The maximum day temperature rose to 20.1 degrees Celsius yesterday and it is expected to continue in the comfortable zone over the next two days as well.

The weather officials have predicted that the maximum and minimum temperatures for the coming day will be around 20 and six degrees respectively.

The mercury had risen to 24.3 degrees Celsius last week.

The weatherman had earlier said that warm weather conditions would be short-lived, and mercury could dip over the weekend following snowfall in the Himalayan region and rains in the foothills.

The piercing chill and icy winds that had persisted for several days cleared away on Monday when the maximum temperature rose to 19.2 degrees Celsius, after keeping below 15 degrees for almost a week.

Low temperatures coupled with icy winds from the northern mountains had made life difficult for people in the city for some days. The capital has recorded at least five cold-related deaths since December 26.

The capital recorded the coldest day for the past 42 years on last Sunday when the maximum temperature dropped to 11 degrees Celsius, 10 degrees below normal.

In the last decade, only last year the minimum did not drop below five degrees Celsius. In 2006, the minimum dropped to 0.2 degrees on January 8 while two years later, the lowest minimum was 1.9 degrees on 2nd of the month.
