MCCC’s Health and Wellness Education Center – College Keeping Trenton Healthy

Mercer County Community College (MCCC) is dedicated to its historic mission of improving the quality of Trenton’s urban life and driving economic opportunity in the city and county. MCCC’s new Health and Wellness Education Center, an ambitious project and significant $4-million investment to provide healthcare for the underserved and create jobs in the state’s capital, clearly demonstrates the college’s commitment to that mission and to the city’s future. 

The 22,500-square-foot, three-story center gave new life to a vacant building in downtown Trenton. Today, 101 North Broad Street includes facilities where instruction is provided for certification in multiple healthcare-related fields. On the center’s third floor, a “life-size” home or care facility-like setting provides real-world training for students by replicating the environment students would find entering the home-care or nurse’s aide professions. MCCC has converted the basement into fully-equipped space for its exercise science program. 

Additionally, MCCC has a service and education partnership at the center with KinderSmile, a not-for-profit organization that serves the dental care needs of urban underserved populations. KinderSmile recently expanded its relationship with MCCC and opened a Community Oral Health Center on the center’s first floor. Now, in addition to KinderSmile providing free dental services to Trenton’s underserved, MCCC is developing a dental assisting program where students will have clinical learning opportunities and gain hands-on experience in the KinderSmile clinic without the college having to purchase expensive dental clinic equipment. 

Further supporting education and job creation in Trenton, MCCC worked closely with Trenton Central High School (TCHS) to establish various healthcare field certification options for its students, with the TCHS curriculum providing an easy transition for students to begin training in the lucrative, in-demand healthcare occupations. Also, the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development is providing grant funds to help dislocated, disadvantaged and underemployed individuals attain industry-valued credentials through MCCC that will lead to rewarding healthcare careers.
