Texas A&M men suffer first loss of season to No. 3 Bulldogs

COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men's swimming and diving team suffered its first loss of the season with a 178-122 outcome against the No. 3-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Friday at the Student Recreation Natatorium.  
 
The Aggies fell to 5-1 in dual meet action in 2015-16. The Aggies return to action in two weeks when they head to Baton Rouge, La., for a dual meet against LSU On Jan. 23.
 
The Aggies won four events on the day with freshman diver Sam Thornton leading the way with a pair of wins. Thornton, from Baildon, United Kingdom, swept the one- and three-meter dives with scores of 387.30 in the one-meter and 415.81 in the three-meter.
 
Also tallying individual victories were sophomores Mauro Castillo and Brock Bonetti. Castillo was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:58.72, while Bonetti touched first in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:45.02.
 
The Aggies nabbed 10 runner-up finishes among the 16 events. A&M was second in both relays with the 200 medley relay foursome of Bonetti, Castillo, sophomore Justin Morey and junior Jacob Gonzales reaching the wall in 1:28.73 and the 400 free relay group of junior Turker Ayar, Gonzales, freshman Connor Long and senior Antoine Marc  finishing in 3:01.65.
 
Grabbing individual runner-up finishes were freshman Angel Martinez in the 200 free (1:40.02), Bonetti in the 100 back (47.69), sophomore Jonathan Tybur in the 100 breast (56.31) and 200 breast (2:03.78), sophomore Tyler Henschel in the one-meter dive (363.45) and the three-meter dive (388.80), Ayar in the 100 free (45.63) and 100 fly (48.77) and senior Mateo Muzek in the 500 free (4:29.92).
