Subaru of America will break ground on its new U.S. corporate headquarters next week, as the company officially cements its move from nearby Cherry Hill to the Gateway District on Admiral Wilson Boulevard near Campbell’s Soup Company.

The District is owned by Campbell’s, and the 13-acre swath of the city is being developed by Brandywine Realty Trust. As such, Denise Morrison, President and CEO of Campbell’s Soup Company, and Jerry Sweeney, President and CEO of Brandywine Realty Trust, will join Subaru’s Thomas Doll, Subaru’s President and COO and Mayor Dana Redd in the ceremonial moving of the dirt. We anticipate that shiny shovels and hardhats will be involved.

The ceremony sounds like it should be quite a show, as a display of historic Subaru vehicles is planned and the earth will be moved by one of the company’s trademark Outback models equipped with a plow. More importantly, the notice says “a new rendering of Subaru HQ” will also be shown.

Subaru received $118 million in tax credits from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to move from Cherry Hill. At 250,000-square-feet, the new facility will be double the size of their current home and house around 600 employees. Though the plans were lambasted in the press (particularly by Inga Saffron for its vast “asphalt sea” of parking) for a design more akin to a suburban office park than an urban complex integrating and embracing multi-modal transportation and sustainability, the City of Camden’s Planning Board unanimously approved the Subaru development in August.
